Twenties can be a very stressful time in your life. Wait, scratch that… it IS a very stressful time in your life. Believe me, I’m on the same train with you. My question to you is when are you are going to get off? For me, it was the day I first felt trapped in my own life. I know that might not make sense now but don’t worry I’ll explain a bit more later.
Picture this: You just graduated college with your four year degree. It only took you three weeks to land a huge corporate job that has completely changed your life for the better. Over all life is good and going your way… But why do you still feel lost; wandering around but not really going anywhere?
In this post I want to talk about how I switched my focus and went from feeling trapped in my own life to finding that freedom I’ve longed for.
There is only so much driving a person can do in one day but I’ve always told myself that if I could get paid to just drive then I’d be happy. Okay, maybe not just driving but more like traveling! I would (still do) spend hours just driving all over the surrounding counties; seeing how far I can get myself to drive before I get convinced to turn around. That was my freedom and what I looked forward to every weekend.
So I asked myself a simple question: What do you want to do with your life?
If you’re like me then there’s not just one answer to that question. Well, I want help people, I want to travel, I want share my faith and be an example of Christ to others, I just simply want to be happy… etc.
Okay, so what do you have to do to make that happen?
So, being fresh out of school I began the long and torturing process of finding a job to bring income which would lead me to finally moving out and being on my own. The only thing I didn’t like about this plan is once I did get out on my own, I’m still stuck on this train that is taking me to all these places, except for the place I want to go.
How many of us have this vision or dream and we’re being told it can’t be reached or in order to reach it you have to do it a certain way? There is a thing called fear that is a constant battle with all of us and if we don’t stop it at the beginning then it’ll only get worse. If you have a vision and a dream then go for it! Don’t stay on this train that is taking you to all these places except for the one place you’re intended to be at.
Feeling trapped is a terrible feeling and I wasn’t sure I was ever going to be able to either escape it or cope with it until a breakthrough happened. Ironically enough I discovered my breakthrough one day when I was scrolling through my pinterest feed. I came across a pin by Chasing Foxes – a blog created by Silas & Grace – about how they made $3,000 blogging. Rewind back to a couple days ago when I had been searching for ways to make money online and I couldn’t find anything! So, when I first read their post I was hooked and knew I had to give it a try. What I was going to write about- I had no idea – but I was going to try and that’s all the encouragement I needed.
The day I saw that pin was the day I decided I wasn’t going to keep riding this train that may be bringing me income and stability but wasn’t bringing me freedom and happiness. Not when I can work hard for something that allows me to reach out to people, share my thoughts, bring me freedom and income, and pursue my passion for traveling God’s green earth! And that’s what I encourage you to do right now!
For a final note, I am not saying don’t get a college degree or quit your full time job to start blogging and pray it brings you income. But rather pray and ask God to put on your heart what your next destination is and whether or not you should get off. You may be working in an office but your heart is wanting to work with children as a teacher. It may be that time, but you’ll never know if you don’t take that first step.
It is true, God does work in mysterious ways and we don’t know what he has in stored for our lives. But I do believe he wants us to be happy and be happy through him. In other words, don’t say I want to travel then go quit your job and spend all of your saving on a beat down camper and exclaim that God will provide. God will provide when it’s convenient for you and glorifying to him. Trust the train God has you on but don’t settle for less and if you feel a need to get off then do it! Just don’t do it alone!
